Disappointment for Seniors and U16’s
Portarlington 1 – 12 vs 4 – 11 Portlaoise
Port Seniors exited the championship to defending champions Portlaoise, Saturday evening. After a fine first half performance Port led 1-9 to 1-3 at the break. The second half saw Portlaoise fast out of the blocks with Aussie Rules star Zach Touhy and former Laois player Brian McCormackto the fore, “The Town” scored 3-1 without reply in a six minute spell early in the second half, putting an unassailable lead between the two sides despite the best efforts of Port.
A big thanks to the Mentors and Players for all their effort this year, a good deal of progress has been made, making the Division 1 Final and putting in some fine performances in the championship.

Portarlington 2 – 6 vs 3 – 8 Ballyroan Abbey Gaels
Our U16s lost out to a strong Ballyroan side, who along with Port were favourites for the Championship, trailing by six points at half time, Port rallied in the second half to reduce the margin to a single point. With the Ballyroan defence under pressure at this stage, Ballyroan broke against the run of play to score a goal adding two late frees to secure victory.
A very big thanks to mentors Clifford, David, Evin & John for the time and effort in preparing the Team. Both players and mentors can be proud of their achievements this year, with securing the League title against Ballyroan in the final the highlight, well done to all involved.

U14 Championship final Report
Port U14’s met St Pauls for the 2nd year in a row in the U14 Championship Final and sadly for Port the result went the same way as last year with St Pauls emerging on top. A physically much bigger St Pauls team in virtually every area of the pitch used this to their advantage and combined with fast snappy delivery cut the Portarlington defence open on numerous occasions in the first half to lead at the break.
Portarlington had come into the game with a few players carrying injuries but they fought on with a renewed vigour in the second half and got the game to within touching distance again and were unlucky not to have put 2 goals past St Pauls with only fine work by their goalie keeping them ahead.
Under severe pressure from Port ,St Pauls broke down the field while leading by 2 pts and then slotted a goal home that put the score at St Pauls 4-07 to Portarlington 3-05 and that’s the way it stayed until the final whistle. Well done to Players and Mentors for getting to the final, they now look forward to the League final, where they meet Portlaoise.

Seniors in Quarter – finals
Port Seniors beat neighbours Emo by 1-11 to 1-9 Saturday evening to progress to the quarter finals of the championship. Emo got off to a flying start with a goal from the throw in from Laois inter-county player Darren Strong. With the score at 1-4 to 0-5 in favour of Emo at the break. David Murphy scored a palmed goal from brother Colm’s pass 8 minutes into the second half, to take the lead 1-6 to 1-5 and from there Port kicked on to ensure the win. Port now meet Portlaoise in two weeks time, date and time TBC.

Port Minors
Port Minors played Portlaoise in the Minor Championship Semi Final and what a match it was! Portarlington literally exploded out of the blocks and were totally dominant in the 1st Half with the score at the break,Portarlington 1-09 to Portlaoise 0-02.After the break play was end to end with Port marginally edging it but after a little while Portlaoise started to exert a little more pressure and put a few scores on the board but it wasn’t going to be Portlaoises day.when after a run of 3-4 unanswered points by Portlaoise a brilliant shot from Jake Foster from a narrow angle to the left of the post found its way inside the opposite post and all the hard work by Portlaoise was undone. The match finished up at Portarlingon 2-13 Portlaoise 0-8
U14’s
Port U14’s met Stradbally Parish Gaels in the Gala U14 Championship Semi Final and got off to a shaky start against a team they totally dominated on their previous meeting. Neither side was giving any quarter and when Stradbally managed to pull ahead by getting their goals, Port fought their way back up to near par again and again. Port trailed at the break by 2 and started the 2nd half well by keeping possession and playing much more confidently and were soon all level again. It remained very tight but as the game went on Stradbaly proceeded to give away a sucession of frees which saw Port creep ahead slowly but surely. With Port up by 4pts with literally a minute or less on the clock a collision occurred between 2 opposing players and while they were getting treatment the final whistle was blown. The match finished up Stradbally 3-02 to Portarlington 0-15.

Electric Ireland Leinster MFC Semi-Final Kildare v Laois
Saturday 3pm St Conleths Park Newbridge
Portarlington GAA wish all the best to our representatives, Colm Murphy, Graham Weldon, Jake Foster, Jason Ward and Paddy O’Sullivan on the Laois Minor panel for Saturdays encounter with Kildare. Laois will play Kildare for a place in this year’s Electric Ireland Leinster MFC Final this Saturday in Newbridge at 3pm. Kildare are the reigning champions after they defeated Westmeath in last year’s decider and indeed it was Westmeath that they faced in the first round this year in Cusack Park Mullingar back in April when once again they wre victorious on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-8. Kildare then faced Longford who came through the back door in Quarter Final at Glennon Bros Pearse Park last month and after a superb game that went to extra time the lily whites emerged victorious on a scoreline of 2-17 to 2-12. Laois defeated Carlow 0-14 to 0-5 in their first round in O Moore Park back in April and had to go to Wexford Park in the Quarter Final to face a fancied Wexford side who had beaten Louth comprehensively in the first round.
There is a saying that goals win matches and this was the case for Laois against Wexford as they emerged narrowly in the end 2-7 to 1-8 to reach the last four. Laois have not won a Leinster MFC title since 2007 despite enjoying a lot of success through the mid 90’s and indeed the early part of the new millenium. Laois won three Leinster MFC titles in a row from 1996 – 98 and won back to back titles again in 2004 & 5. Kildare’s win last year was their first title in 22 years. Laois have 9 Leinster MFC titles only one behind Meath who are in second place. Kildare have 6 titles. The Fr. Larry Murphy Cup is at present sitting in Kildare as they bid to reach back to back finals for the first time since 1991. The winners of this semi-final will play the winners of Offaly v Dublin who play next Thursday July 10th In O Connor Park Tullamore at 7:30pm (Article courtesy of Leinster GAA)
